"An imperfect plan aggressively pursued today is better than a perfect plan put off for a future date."
- Unknown Billionaire
I heard this on a webinar on real estate. It stood out more than the information that I was on the call trying to get. I immediately began to digest this profound statement. I understood what it meant right away. You must take action. You can only plan so much. Not all is revealed in the beginning. If you’re not careful the planning will become an excuse for not doing. It’s easy to hide behind, “I’m getting my business plan together.” I’m not saying that you don’t need to have a plan; I’m saying that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Nobody is perfect. Thomas Edison tried over 900 times before he was successful at creating the incandescent light bulb that worked. When asked about failing over 900 times he said that he didn’t fail he found over 900 ways not to make a light bulb. We’re bound to make mistakes but its how you handle them that make the difference.
You must fail forward. Imagine running a race and you’re almost at the finish line and you trip. If you fall forward then you’re, in most cases, at least 5 feet closer to the finish line. I know that maybe a watered down version of what Maxwell meant but you get the picture. You must learn to make the most of your mistakes. In his book, “Failing Forward”, he says, “The difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure.” You must understand that it’s not a matter of if you’re going to have problems but how you’re going to handle them. Mistakes should been used as stepping stones to get you to success.
Get your plan together. Then put that plan into ACTION. After you’ve done your due diligence start making things happen. See your plan as an outline and be flexible. If something doesn’t work, change it out. Don’t be afraid of change. It’s inevitable. “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.” – Benjamin Franklin
It doesn’t matter what business you have or where you work. All truth is parallel. Get the principle and apply it to whatever your goals are. You can plan your trip all day at home but until you get in the car and begin to drive you’ll never reach your destination. Be a person of action. Get your plan together and work it.
